The DOCTOR

As one of the early African-American students at Duke University, Dr. Carl Mitchell graduated with a Bachelor of Science in sociology. The South Carolina native earned his medical doctorate at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he also completed his residency. Additionally, Dr. Mitchell completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. While serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, Dr. Mitchell attained the rank of Major.

By choosing to practice family medicine, Dr. Mitchell fulfilled a lifelong dream of helping the underserved receive access to healthcare. “As a family physician, I’m able to point the underserved in the right direction so they can get the healthcare access they need.”

Although Dr. Mitchell practices the full scope of family medicine, he has a special interest in diabetes. Having a family history of diabetes, he has seen firsthand the challenges of the disease and the complications associated with it.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing someone come in with a condition like diabetes and going on the journey with the patient until that condition is under control,” Dr. Mitchell explains. “I love to see patients smile.”

Dr. Mitchell is a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, and he has participated in several research projects on COPD and diabetes. He can often be found speaking to community groups on topics such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and a healthy diet.

When he’s not working, Dr. Mitchell enjoys playing tennis, visiting art museums, and watching sports, especially professional tennis and Duke University basketball. He is also a Trustee at First Nazareth Baptist Church.
